Goldman Sachs Community Team Works Revamps “Surf Shack”

Today is the first (real) day of summer, but we’ve been prepping for surf season for a while.

Last week a dozen Goldman Sachs Community TeamWorks volunteers spiffed up the ‘Surf Shack’ on Beach 69th Street in the Rockaways, Queens, where we store our gear and enjoy the shade during Surf Mentor. They also helped us beautify the stretch of beach between Beach 67th and Beach 69th streets — the area we use for program days.

So, a little history about the ‘Surf Shack.’ In 2008, Averne by the Sea let us use a construction trailer for the summer. It was a half a block from the ocean, but we were stoked on it. This year Averne donated a 20′ x 10′ wood shed to us that is actually a stone’s toss from the beach.

When Goldman Sachs nominated us for a community service project through their philanthropic arm, Community TeamWorks, we had just the opportunity for them.

Thanks to these guys the ‘Surf Shack’ is now freshly painted with signature STOKED blue trimming, too.

The sandy bit of beach was pretty clean already, so most of the labor went into hacking weed stalks from between the boardwalk planks. The barefoot walk from the shack to the ocean will be easy on the eyes and feet now.

Thanks so much to the Community TeamWorks volunteers, the Parks Department and to Arverne by the Sea. Special thanks for Meghan McGarry for taking photographs (more here) and Gordon Cabaniss for nominating us. We are way stoked for the summer!
