New York City 1-Day Weekend Getaways: Rockaway Beach by Bike

It’s that wonderful time of year in New York City where all the best summer activities brush off the final layer of frost, and spring back to life. There are so many great ways to enjoy the outdoors both in and around the city that it would be a crime not to hit the pavement and start exploring! Why not try out Arverne by the Sea and Rockaway Beach in Queens this weekend?

Step 1: Head to South Street Seaport

Take a taxi, bus, or subway ride to South Street Seaport in Manhattan in order to begin your journey. Head over to Pier 11 and ask for the Boat and Bike Combo which includes a bike for the day, and round-trip ferry out to Rockaway Beach. The trip will take about one hour each way. Keep in mind that the boat leaves from Pier 17 on weekdays. For more information contact Blazing Saddles Bike Rentals & Tours, or just head to their website.

Step 2: Arrive at Jacob Riis Park Beach in Rockaway

From the moment you arrive, you will feel transported to another pace of life. The Rockaway Gateway Greenway is a multi-use, paved pathway which makes for easy cruising on two wheels, and takes riders past features like the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, and Floyd Bennett Field. Bring your swimsuit, so that after some morning riding you can cool off by jumping into the beach at Jacob Riis Park, or Rockaway Beach for a quick dip. Learn more about the Gateway National Recreation Area before making the trip.

Step 3: Try the Fish Tacos

An absolute “must” while in the area is a trip to Rockaway Taco. Open all summer, the famous fish tacos are supremely satisfying while spending a leisurely day enjoying the sun and sand.

Step 4: Catch Some Waves or Rays

If you are the adventurous type, head to the 92nd-94th Street designated surfing area. There are boards for rent and lessons available through the Breakwater Surf Co., located at the Arverne By The Sea retail plaza on Rockaway Beach Blvd. Not up for surfing? Why not just relax in the sand, take a swim, and enjoy the atmosphere? Who ever said only Californians could be beach bums in the summer?

Step 5: Bike to some Beachside Concessions

The beachfront area between about 90th Street and 106th Street is full of tasty beach concessions, perfect for a quick smoothie, ice cream, lemonade, or chocolate-dipped banana before heading back. After all, with so many active things to do in Rockaway, you’ve earned a little dessert.

Step 6: Imagine Beachside Living as the Coastline Disappears in the Distance

While on the ferry back, enjoy a beverage from the bar, and watch the beach disappear in the distance.

More and more people are moving out to areas like Arverne By The Sea in Rockaway, which boasts affordable beach living and an unbeatable lifestyle. If you enjoy your weekend “away,” it might be time to consider making the move permanent!
