Overview of the Museum of Moving Image
After closing for a brief period the Museum of Moving Image reopened its doors in January 2011 among much fanfare. This unique museum shows visitors the magic, technology, and much of the history behind the movies in a way nothing else has been able to duplicate. Not only will you and the entire family have a great time, it is a learning experience as well. It offers the traditional museum exhibits along with a variety of hands-on activities that the young and the old alike will enjoy. In addition to the permanent and rotating exhibits visitors will find a café, gift shop, and movie theatre all on the first floor.
What are some of the exhibits?
The museum has been expanded recently and there is plenty for everyone to see. Some of the popular exhibits include interactive displays that allow you to dub your own voice into scenes from the Wizard of Oz, add your own sound effects to Independence Day, or create your own stop-motion animation. You can even make a short film of yourself and have it printed into a flip book at the gift shop.
There is plenty of fun and excitement at the Museum of Moving Image, but there is plenty of educational value as well including archives, technical information about movie making, history, and much more. It is a regular stop for local school children on field trip, residents of the surrounding area like Arverne by the Sea, and tourists alike.
What movies are showing at the museum?
Keeping in the spirit of the museum classical films and interesting features are regularly shown each weekend and on some weekdays depending on the schedule. These screenings are free with regular admission so you don’t have to pay extra if something catches your interest. The movie schedule is posted each week on the museums official website. http://www.movingimage.us/films/
